Zanzibar – East Coast – North
The Sultan Sands Island Resort is the newest resort of the Bluebay Hotels Group, having received its first guests in July 2008.
Overview
Sultan Sand is a large resort, with a choice of 76 rooms built in single storey African style rondavels – each with two tastefully decorated rooms with a separate changing room leading into the superbly appointed en-suite bathroom. It nestles on the beachfront of a 25 acre stretch of subtly landscaped gardens decked with over 1000 palm trees.
The Sultan Sands Island Resort stands where, until 2006, the La Villa Beach Club stood – then a standard 20 roomed hotel next to the Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa. After its acquisition by the Group, it was transformed into a unique, one-of-a-kind holiday facility. It is now a resort befitting its name association with the fabled Omani Sultans who ruled the Zanzibar Islands for centuries.
Location of Sultan Sands
The Sultan Sands Island Resort is situated next to its sister resort, the Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa, on the beachfront of the wide, sparkling beaches of Kiwengwa in the east coast of Zanzibar.
Accommodation
The Sultan Sands Island Resort has a total of 76 rooms (56 Pwani Rooms & 20 Bahari Rooms), made up of the following categories:
Each Room (in the both room categories) offers a spacious bedroom, separate dressing room, en-suite bathroom and a veranda or balcony.
The furnishings are tasteful traditional Zanzibar furniture – including either one large bed or two queen size beds with mosquito nets, separate dressing room, en-suite bathroom with a shower and a spacious veranda. A touch of modernity is added by the split-level air conditioners, ceiling fans, satellite TV’s, mini-bars, hair dryers, safes and telephones. Smoke detectors and fire alarms complete the picture.
Pwani Rooms
These are the newly constructed rooms of the Sultan Sands. They are on rising grounds in beautiful landscaped gardens, facing out to the Ocean. They are built-in single storey traditional rondavels, each with two tastefully decorated bed rooms with separate changing rooms leading into superbly appointed en-suite bathrooms.
These rooms are split level with a lower level sitting area with a wide comfortable couch. They bear the hallmarks of modern day convenience and comfort.
Bahari Rooms
These are the original La Villa Beach Club rooms but modernized and refurbished to be at par with the newer PWANI Rooms. They still bear the original concept of La Villa: right at the Ocean edge, toes-in-the-sand theme. They are all Sea front and Sea View. A supplement is applicable for this room category over the PWANI Rooms.
Prior to the extension of the Hotel, La Villa Club was an intimate 20-roomed facility and even within Sultan Sands, the atmosphere of this old wing remains pretty much the same.
The rooms are varied in size and structure within this accommodation category, and they coalesce around the original, small swimming pool.
Facilities
Guests at the Sultan Sands Islands Resort are provided with a wide range of services and facilities at our neighboring sister Resort – Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa – where all the listed services and facilities are available to guests at Sultan Sands as well.
The services and facilities cater for the tastes and interests of both those who prefer whiling away on the beach and those who like their holidays filled with activity. There are, too, special treats for those who want to combine business and leisure.
Environment and local community
Sultan Sands on the Environment:
“In all the hotels and resorts of the Bluebay Group, environmental sustenance and care are a central consideration. We are, after all, in the tourism business which, more than most other industries, is directly and intricately linked to the wellbeing of the natural flora, fauna and such other nature’s gifts as the beach.
We therefore take the environment very seriously. All our facilities are built to merge with, complement and protect the natural environment. Within and in the surroundings of our hotels and resorts, deliberate measures are constantly made to restore and regenerate the natural and indigenous environment. At the resorts, the natural vegetation is retained and nurtured, and the beaches left in their natural state. At the Zanzibar Stone Town based Beyt al Chai, we have restored the building in the traditional Zanzibar way, blending African with Arabic designs and finishes and using local labor and expertise.”
Zanziplanet reviews
Sultan Sands is the flagship accommodation from the Bluebay Group. It is modern and stylish and houses everything a large resort should. We think Sultan Sands offers excellent value for money – particularly out of season – and should be a strong contender for those travelling with a group or with family.

Zanziplanet reviews
Ocean Paradise Resort is a very decent resort; clean, spacious and welcoming. Like all big hotels, the resort can seem a little more impersonal than those smaller ones, but the staff are friendly, polite, caring and always there to make each guest feel comfortable. The rooms are a good size, clean and well decorated, and the food is great. Definitely a good choice!
